Food Safety & Ocean Resin

At Holilto, your safety and satisfaction are our top priorities. Every board we craft is designed not only to be beautiful but also safe for daily use with food.

🌳 Natural Wood, Treated with Care

  • We select high-quality padauk wood, naturally rich in color and grain.

  • Our wood is treated naturally, without any chemicals, preserving its organic beauty while ensuring it remains food-safe and environmentally friendly.

🌊 Ocean-Inspired Resin, Non-Toxic and Safe

  • The flowing waves on each board are created with non-toxic, high-quality epoxy resin.

  • Our resin is: Food contact safe once fully cured

  • While resin provides a stunning visual texture, it is intended primarily for presentation and decorative use.

🛡️ Protective Finish with Food-Grade Mineral Oil

To further enhance durability and food safety, every board is finished with FDA-approved food-grade mineral oil.
This natural oil:

  • Nourishes the wood, preventing drying and cracking

  • Creates a moisture-resistant barrier without affecting taste or scent

  • Maintains the board’s rich color and smooth feel over time

We recommend reapplying a food-safe mineral oil regularly to extend the life and beauty of your board. Should food-safe mineral oil be unavailable, a light application of an edible oil, such as high-quality olive oil, with a soft cloth can also help nourish and protect the wooden surface.

🍴 Serving vs. Cutting: How to Use Your Board Safely

  • Use your Holilto board for serving dry and cold foods like cheeses, fruits, pastries, and charcuterie.

  • Avoid cutting directly on the resin surface to prevent scratches.

  • If you wish to cut food, flip the board over and cut on the plain wooden back side, placing a towel or damp cloth underneath to prevent slipping.

🧼 Cleaning and Care Tips

  • Gently clean the board using a soft cloth and cool water

  • Dry immediately with a towel or stand upright to air dry after cleaning

  • Do not soak, expose to prolonged moisture, or place in a dishwasher

  • Avoid placing hot or oily foods directly onto the resin side

Regular care will maintain your board’s beauty, functionality, and food safety for years to come.

❓ FAQs on Food Safety

1. Can I cut directly on the resin part of the board?

No. The resin surface is decorative and not intended for cutting. Always use the wooden side of your board for chopping or slicing to avoid damaging your knives and the resin finish.

2. Is it safe to serve food on the resin surface?

Yes, for dry and cold foods like cheese, fruits, or bread. We recommend avoiding oily, acidic, or hot food on resin areas to maintain both the look and safety of the board.

3. Can I put Holilto boards in the dishwasher?

No. Like all handmade wooden and resin items, Holilto boards should be hand-washed only with a damp cloth and mild soap. Do not soak or place them in the dishwasher.

4. Can I serve hot dishes or use it as a trivet?

We do not recommend placing hot pans or dishes directly on resin surfaces. Resin may soften or become damaged under high heat.

5. How should I care for my board over time?

  • Clean with a soft cloth and gentle soap

  • Reapply a food-safe mineral oil monthly to nourish and protect the wood. If food-safe mineral oil is not available, you can lightly coat the wooden surface with edible oils such as olive oil using a soft cloth.

  • Keep out of direct sunlight and avoid high humidity or heat exposure

With simple care, your board will stay beautiful for years.
